Blog from the Smutzies

Well where did we leave off…. Yesterday we went for a swim in the pool. It’s not very big but it was still quite refreshing. Then we went to get ready and went to dinner. We went to a building owned by Diana’s parents. Diana’s parents were there along with a friend of theirs. We had pizza and salad for dinner. The building was a neat place. We really liked the heart chairs, and there were some other fun chairs too. After we had stuffed our faces Don Young, don’t know how to spell, gave us a presentation about Katrina the devastation and the rebuilding. He had several power points of photographs and lots of interesting stories. The photographs were absolutely amazing, and you could tell he had lots of passion for this project. Some of the stories of course were sad, but they had a huge impact and gave us a better understanding for things that happened here. A lot of the stories and photographs also showed the determination and heart of the human spirit, and how many people don’t break easily and that was an incredible thing to see.

We then went to some coffee place and got square donuts. They reminded us of sopapillas but tasted like funnel cake. They were French donuts, and were covered in tons of powdered sugar. We ate some of the donuts, but instead of them disappearing they were multiplying! Brian and Alexander started picking them up and blowing powdered sugar at each other. They got it everywhere. We then came back and went to bed…made mimis.

This morning we rolled out of bed and had breakfast, which was strawberries with granola and yogurt and then Cheese soufflé, good ol’ southern grits, and ham. The boys slept in because there alarms didn’t go off so we were a little late. We went to the neighborhood where Habitat for Humanity is working…The Musicians Village, and waited around for instructions. We then had to move a bunch of trusses over by a house. Those are the parts that make the pitch of the roof just in case somebody doesn’t know. Some of the others were taking out boards off the top of the house to get ready for the trusses and taking out nails so that nobody would step on them, and guess what, somebody managed to step on one anyway. Brian stepped on a nail and got help from a First Responder named Terry. Where was the schmutzie? Without any equipment that’s where. We started to put the trusses on the roof and found out we had moved a stack of the wrong ones. They weren’t the right size, so we started doing other tasks until lunch, which pretty much consisted of finding pink wood. Then lunch time. We went to Little Dizzy or something like that. Most of us had fried chicken and it was quite tasty.

After that we came back here and have been in meetings. We have a ghost tour tonight which should be fun… Lisa thinks she will have to crawl in bed with Jean though after it, but it won’t really help cause she has ghosts in her room. Anyway we both smell funny so we are going to go take showers. Until next time…the Schmutzies.

Hi my dears!

Thanks for the interesting update on life, work, and food in New Orleans. Didn't I tell you that any kind of fried dough is delicious, no matter what you call it, or how you spell it. Sounds like you guys were working hard. I still want to know what kind of green thing Randy was going to swim in yesterday, and why he didn't choose the pool. Have fun on your ghost tour, and watch out for the ghost in Jean's room! We are off to the movies.

Love,

Me
